  • Early Childhood Programming 2017-18

Posted by Cassie Nentl at 4/5/2017

One of the many exciting components of our district’s building project is the moving of both Early Childhood programming and kindergarten back into the elementary schools. A 2015 community survey clearly indicated that our district families want their children to attend school in their home community. The AAS Early Childhood Task Force (composed of district administrators, Early Childhood, and Community Education staff) with valuable input from community members and the Early Childhood Parent Advisory Council, worked diligently to provide the highest-quality programming options available, based on the following principles:

    1. Best Practice - The Minnesota Department of Education, based on research, strongly encourages districts to provide four-year-old programming that meets for a minimum of 350 hours/year to ensure students acquire the skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten.
    2. Decreased Transitions - Promoting continuity throughout the day for children in early childhood programming reduces anxiety and, in turn, nurtures academic and social/emotional success in school. Our Preschool Camp model is one way we are decreasing student transitions.
    3. Developmentally Appropriate - Our licensed early childhood educators already differentiate curriculum for all students, and our Preschool Camp model (split sections for 3’s and 4’s, programmed by teachers) will ensure our students receive the most  developmentally appropriate programming possible.
    4. Supporting our Families - Our goal is to prepare all children for entrance into kindergarten. In order to do so, we are continuing to offer full-time options, which now include Preschool Camp and Wrap-Around Care, to help enhance preschool access for our families and ensure our students are prepared for kindergarten.

On Friday, March 31st the 2nd graders at Albany Elementary spent the day camping!  This wasn't just any ordinary camping trip, this was a trip to Camp Read-A-Lot!  The day was filled with reading in tents and around campfires, a double digit addition scoot, camping bingo, s’mores and a Camp Trading Post money counting activity.  Check out a video of the highlights of the day below!

  • 100 Mile Club

Pictured are students from Albany Elementary who are getting fit by running at school. The students earn a t-shirt after reaching 25 miles, with an ultimate goal of at least 100 miles or more.  A donation from the Albany Jaycees allowed us to order the t-shirts for our participants.

  • Albany Elementary Jumps for Heart Health!

Posted by Ann Schultz at 2/26/2017 5:15:00 PM

Third through sixth grade students raised money for the American Heart Association. One hundred seventeen students collected donations totalling $7,551.36 and pledged to jump rope for two hours on Tuesday, February 21. Students moved between stations during the Albany Elementary annual Jump Rope for Heart. This event has been going for more than 20 years and remains a very popular event for the students.  Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped make this event possible.

    Fifth graders master two ropes.

The Albany Junior High Math Team just completed their 2016-2017 season with a day spent at the MATHCOUNTS competition held at St. Cloud State University on February 7th.  Prior to that, the team of 7 was a part of the Minnesota Junior High Math League, competing in 5 meets from October to January with 7 other area teams. Albany finished 3rd in their division. Top individual awards went to Gina Wege (2nd) and Natalie Fischer (5th), both receiving medals for their accomplishment!  At MATHCOUNTS, Natalie Fischer finished in the top 16 (tie for 7th place) and was awarded the opportunity to participate in the Countdown Round. The team, coached by senior high math teacher, Jeanne Bruns, practiced Wednesday mornings at 7:20-8:05.

  • Swimming Competition

Posted by Wendy Hanson at 2/15/2017

Albany Special Olympics Athletes made quite a splash on Sunday, February 12th at the Area 7 Special Olympics Aquatics Competition. The competition was held at the Becker High School. Our Albany Athletes were well supported in the stands with many family members and friends in attendance to cheer on our athletes. The meet started with the singing of the National Anthem followed by Albany‛s Allison Wielenberg leading the athletes in the Special Olympics Oath, “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt!” Many personal best times were shattered by our athletes and they represented Albany with great pride. A special thanks to Ann Ressler, Sandy Wielenberg and Kylie Bartz for all their help in getting athletes to staging, chaperoning athletes when they were not competing and leading the cheering section.
